SUMMARY:Valley Forge Celebrates the French Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford’s America250 Lecture Series presents “Valley Forge Celebrates the French Alliance” by Nancy K. Loane\, Ed.D.  \n\n\n\nMay 6\, 1778 was a beautiful day for a celebration at the Valley Forge encampment. The alliance between France and the United States of America\, important in supplying vital military and financial aid to the new country\, had just been ratified. Now\, Washington’s soldiers could hope that the war would soon be over\, the Continental Army would disband\, and they would go home.  \n\n\n\nThis presentation will begin at 2 PM in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Prior to the lecture\, attendees may visit the Snyder Gallery and our 2026 Focus Exhibit. The Snyder Gallery closes at 4 PM.

SUMMARY:The Painter's Fire
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford’s Untold Stories Series welcomes author Zara Anishanslin as she presents a lecture on her book “The Painter’s Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution.”  \n\n\n\nArtists played a crucial role in the American Revolution\, focusing on three figures: Robert Edge Pine\, Prince Demah\, and Patience Wright. Her book argues that art was a powerful tool for forging revolutionary ideals\, highlighting how these diverse artists—including a woman and an enslaved man—used paint\, canvas\, and wax to support the cause of liberty on both sides of the Atlantic.  \n\n\n\nA limited number of copies of the author’s book will be available for purchase and signing following the lecture. \n\n\n\nThis lecture will be held in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Admission is for the lecture only and does not include the Snyder Gallery or Hand Mansion.

SUMMARY:What Were They Wearing? Lancastrians (and Others) at the Time of the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford’s Fashion Lecture Series welcomes Robert S. DuPlessis as he presents “What Were They Wearing? Lancastrians (and Others) at the Time of the Revolution.”  \n\n\n\nThough only settled in the 1720s\, by 1760 Lancaster was already the largest inland town in British North America and had become an important commercial center for the “Indian trade\,” the furs and skins supplied by Native Americans\, as well as for agricultural and metal goods that settlers produced. How did this bustling trade affect the material lives of residents of the borough and its rural hinterland? To what extent did they participate in the consumer revolution that northwestern European nations and their North American colonies experienced? Did the kinds of changes in material culture observed in Philadelphia\, with which Lancaster had close economic links\, also affect the borough and surrounding countryside? Or did Lancastrians develop a characteristic inland or frontier material culture?  \n\n\n\nThis presentation will begin at 2 PM in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Visitors may park in the area located behind the Barn. Prior to the lecture\, attendees may visit the Snyder Gallery and our 2026 Focus Exhibit. The Snyder Gallery closes at 4 PM.

SUMMARY:After the Fashion of His Country: Asians and Asia in the 18th Century
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford’s Untold Stories of the  Revolution Series welcomes Daniel Sieh as he presents “After the Fashion of HIs Country: Asians and Asia in the 18th Century.”  \n\n\n\nAsia was known for centuries in Europe\, and the British were keen to profit off the exotic goods through commerce. This trade was far from a one-sided exchange; it was a dialogue between two very distinct cultures. Goods\, ideas and people flowed through trade routes established by the British East India Company and reached as far as the 13 colonies (soon\, the nascent United States). These goods\, and yes\, even people\, arrived as distant foreigners in a strange land\, but left an indelible mark that has only recently been uncovered. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will begin at 2 PM in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. It will be approximately one hour in length.  Please note that admission is for the lecture and does not include the Snyder Gallery.

SUMMARY:Colonial Era Tavern Music Concert with Forbes Road Frolic
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford welcomes Forbes Road Frolic for a concert of Colonial Era Tavern Music. This musical duo offers a well-researched musical experience using instruments that are descended from those of the 17th and 18th centuries. They tailor the music to be enjoyed by today’s audiences even though it is at least 200 years old. This music is not the formal music of the Baroque era or chamber music! Rather\, Forbes Road Frolic tries to replicate the gritty\, colloquial music that was likely to be heard in a tavern in British America of the period from the 1750’s through the American War of Independence. Dressed in period attire\, they provide an authentic colonial tavern musical experience in ways.  \n\n\n\nForbes Road Frolic previously performed at Historic Rock Ford during our Lafayette Day celebration and Yuletide special event in 2025.  \n\n\n\nAbout this performance: The performance will be held on the piazza of the Hand Mansion with seating on the lawn. The performance area will open 45 minutes prior to the concert time. Seating is on a first-come basis. Guests should bring their own chairs (blankets are not recommended so that everyone may have a good view of the piazza). SUMMARY:Let the Oppressed Go Free: Abolitionism in Revolutionary America
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford’s Untold Stories of the Revolution Lecture Series welcomes Nicholas P. Wood as he presents “Let the Oppressed Go Free: Abolitionism in Revolutionary America.”  \n\n\n\nIn 1764\, on the heels of the French and Indian War\, slavery was legal in every British colony and poised for expansion as Britain acquired new territories in the Americas and Africa. Yet within just two decades – by the end of the Revolutionary War – six northern states had taken decisive steps toward abolition\, with two more soon to follow. In this talk\, Professor Nicholas P. Wood explores how the American Revolution reshaped public attitudes toward slavery by intersecting with preexisting Quaker antislavery movement along with Black resistance. Pennsylvania became the first state to pass an abolition law in 1780\, and this decision can only be understood in the context\, war\, antislavery theology\, and Black activism.

SUMMARY:The Revolution's Last Men: The Soldiers Behind the Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford’s Untold Stories of the American Revolution Lecture Series welcomes Don N. Hagist as he presents “The Revolution’s Last Men: The Soldiers Behind the Photographs.”  \n\n\n\nDuring a Civil War that threatened to tear the United States apart came the realization that only a handful of veterans of the American Revolution still survived – men who had fought the war that created the nation. Six of these men were photographed and interviewed for a book that appeared late in 1864. Their images have captivated generations since then; but\, through a combination of faded memories and the interviewer’s patriotic agenda\, the biographies accompanying these amazing photographs were garbled and distorted\, containing information that ranged from inaccurate to implausible. Now for the first time the military careers of these men have been researched in detail using a wide range of primary sources. The result is a new perspective on the actual service of these soldiers\, from enlistment to discharge\, along with new details of their relatively quiet post-war lives \n\n\n\nThis presentation will begin at 6:30 PM in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. It will be approximately 2 hours in length. Please note that admission is for the lecture and does not include the Snyder Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rock Ford’s America250 Lecture Series welcomes author Karin Wulf as she presents “Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection.” This lecture is based upon her book of the same name and explores how genealogy was a powerful force in 18th-century America\, shaping society\, law\, and identity for all people\, not just elites. The book argues that family records\, created in diverse forms from documents to artifacts\, were crucial for individuals and institutions to claim status\, define freedom (especially in relation to slavery)\, and navigate legal and social structures\, connecting personal emotion with political power. Wulf shows how genealogy was a universal practice\, used by everyone from enslaved people seeking freedom to founding fathers seeking status\, making it central to understanding the American past.  \n\n\n\nThis presentation will be held in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Please note that admission is for the lecture only and does not include the Snyder Gallery.

SUMMARY:Baroque Music Concert by the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:After a successful performance here in 2025\, Historic Rock Ford is delighted to welcome back the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble for an evening of Baroque chamber music.  \n\n\n\nThe ensemble was started by harpsichordist Faith Martin. After studying music at the harpsichord for several years\, Faith realized that she most enjoyed using this instrument in collaboration with other musicians\, which led her to organize the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble. Her sister Mercy on the violin\, her brother Clayton on the cello\, and several musician friends and vocal soloists will join her to bring this program of live music to Rock Ford. Guests to Historic Rock Ford may also recognize Faith and Mercy from their performances in the Hand Mansion during the annual Yuletide event for the past four years. In the event of rain\, this event will be held under the tent by the Rock Ford Barn. Concessions will be available for purchase with proceeds benefitting Historic Rock Ford.
